Company Description

SBI is a cost engineering and project management firm that plays a critical role on highly complex and challenging construction projects. We work across a wide range of sectors, including high-end residential, healthcare, commercial, infrastructure, and others, serving developers, owners, investors, non-profits, and institutional clients. Our approach is grounded in facts, verified data, and disciplined analysis, enabling clients to make timely, well-informed decisions. As a firm, SBI is organized into three primary divisions: leadership, technical, and advisory. The leadership division is responsible for the overall management of construction projects, including design management, owner’s representation, contract negotiation, and related project leadership functions. The technical division focuses on cost management, estimating, quantity surveying, auditing, and the procurement of construction services, including design consultants, construction managers, and subcontractors. The advisory division provides due diligence and feasibility studies, dispute resolution, litigation support, and other strategic consulting services. While most of our work is concentrated in the New York City area, we also have a strong presence in South Florida and support projects across the United States.

Job Position

Project Director

Job Description

As Project Director, I oversee and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously to ensure they remain aligned with overall project goals and client objectives. I help establish the processes, structure, and accountability needed to position projects for success, with a focus on schedule, budget, and effective execution. A typical day includes reviewing project documentation (such as project drawings, change orders, payment applications / invoices, cash flow reports, etc.) and correspondence, meeting internally with our team to track progress on active items, participating in external meetings with developers, engineers, construction managers, and other key stakeholders, and conducting jobsite walkthroughs to observe work in place and assess field conditions firsthand. I also maintain strong client relationships and serve as a primary point of contact across my projects. As part of the firm’s leadership team, I also play an active role in business development by identifying and pursuing new opportunities through industry relationships and professional networks. In addition, I support the firm’s ongoing professional development efforts by helping train and mentor employees to promote continuous growth across the organization.

Learning Goals

Students can expect to learn all about the construction and engineering industry: - Possible career paths and how to get them started - What role each stakeholder plays in the life of a project (owner, engineer, architect, specialty consultant, owner's rep, subcontractor, construction manager, etc.) - How to successfully execute large-scale projects and what it takes to plan for one - How to deal with daily challenges like schedule delays, change orders, design changes, cost increases, site logistical constraints, public agencies, etc. - What a typical day looks like - A brief overview of some recent projects I've worked on or are currently working on: Powerhouse Arts (Brooklyn, NY), South Station Tower (Boston, MA), 80 Clarkson (New York, NY), JFK New Terminal One (Queens, NY), 141 E Houston (New York, NY), BPCA Northwest Resiliency (New York, NY), among many others that SBI is currently involved in - Get a private tour of 80 Clarkson.
