Established in 1967, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) is comprised of the 750 players in the National Hockey League (NHL). The primary role of the Association is to act as the collective bargaining unit on behalf of the players, but it also assists and manages in areas such as marketing, licensing, pension, insurance and communications.

Job Description

Participation in and oversight of the legal department of the NHLPA, which includes negotiating and enforcing collective bargaining agreements with the NHL and generally representing players in their employment relationship with NHL clubs.

Learning Goals

The externship will focus on the unique place professional sports unions hold in the labor world and how the relationships between sports unions and leagues are vital to the continued growth of professional sports. We will also discuss the challenges of breaking into the sports industry. In addition, we will discuss practicing law in NYC, the demands that go with it, and how that experience can provide opportunities for career development.
